How to Clean a Maltese's Eyes

Maltese dogs are small and white, so tear staining, the residue left by water running from the eyes, is especially noticeable. While all dogs tear up to clean their eyes, the white fur of the Maltese makes the staining very stark. The stains may be red, pink, or brown, and they give the dog an unhealthy, unclean look. Clean your Maltese's eyes as soon as you notice staining.

Instructions

  1. Regular Care

    • 1
Moisten the Maltese's face with a damp washcloth.
    • 2
Apply a small amount of mild dog shampoo to the dog's face. Be gentle, and pay special attention to any tear stains.
    • 4
Rinse the Maltese's face thoroughly with clean water.

    Staining

    • 5
Mix equal parts milk of magnesium and hydrogen peroxide in a bowl.
    • 6
Add enough corn starch to give the mixture a pasty texture.
    • 7
Use your fingers to work the paste into the stained areas.
    • 8
      Let the mixture dry overnight.
    • 9
Wash the dog's face in the morning, and apply a conditioner to the tear-stained areas.
    • 10
Repeat the process every day until the Maltese's tear staining is gone.
